Bundesliga Preview: Dortmund vs Mainz

Dortmund’s title challenge is now officially over as Bayern Munich have beaten Werder Bremen to secure their 29th Bundesliga title (30 overall).

With teams around them dropping points, Dortmund are close to securing second place in the Bundesliga. A win tonight could see BVB pull further away from third-placed RB Leipzig.

Saturday’s dramatic 1-0 away win at Düsseldorf saw Dortmund extend their winning run to three games. Both sides looked to be walking away with a share of the points until Håland came on to score his 11th league goal in the 95th minute.

Dortmund also had a goal controversially ruled out after VAR had deemed Guerreiro to have handled the ball before scoring.

On Sunday afternoon Mainz lost 1-0 at home to Augsburg. After going behind in the 1st minute the home side could still not find a way to get back into the game. This makes the fight for survival a three-horse race between themselves, Düsseldorf and Werder Bremen.

With Bremen losing 1-0 at home last night to Bayern, Mainz have a chance to try and pull clear from the team’s bellow.

However, that chance may be slim with Dortmund winning the reverse fixture between these two sides 4-0 back in December

Mainz does not have the best record against BVB, winning only one out of the last 10 meetings in the league. The last four meetings between these two sides have seen over 2.5 goals.

The team news for Dortmund is the possible return to the starting XI for Erling Håland. The striker came from the bench on Saturday after missing his sides last two games with a knee injury. Midfielders Dahoud and Delaney remain unavailable through injuries. Whilst club captain Marco Reus is nearing a return from injury this midweek game is too soon for him.

Meanwhile, the team news for Mainz is they are again without goalkeeper Robin Zentner who is still recovering from a ruptured cruciate ligament injury. Another player who will miss this game is on-loan Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi. The striker was taken off on a stretcher on Sunday against Augsburg with a concussion injury.

Dortmund team prediction: Burki; Piszczek, Hummels, Akanji; Hakimi, Witsel, Can, Guerreiro; Sancho, Håland, Hazard

Mainz team prediction: Müller, Baku, St. Juste, Niakhate, Brosinski; Barreiro, Latza Öztunali, Boetius, Quaison; Mateta
